What do Walt Disney, Netflix, IMAX, and ESPN - the most prominent sports television station have in common? They use our streaming software! And you can participate in it! Imagine the vast amounts of data and the sophisticated back-end technologies needed to deliver the movie on the big screen. It’s like pushing an elephant through a keyhole. This is what Comprimato does with video and image compression. And, we can do it extremely fast and in real-time!
What is Comprimato?
Comprimato is a Brno-based R&D team developing software infrastructure for video streaming. In April 2026, we joined AJA Video Systems — a California-based broadcast equipment company — while keeping our engineering culture and Brno roots. We are the authors of the first and fastest GPU-accelerated implementation of the JPEG2000 codec, supporting NVIDIA, Intel, and AMD GPUs across all major operating systems. You can find our clients in the media & entertainment, geospatial, and medical imaging industries. Among our customers are global players like ESPN, Technicolor, NBA, O2, and Zayo.
How it all started?
The idea was born in the heads of a few students as a university project and it might have ended up like most university projects, in a drawer. Fortunately, one of the students, Jiří Matela, identified a huge business opportunity, and thanks to his clear vision, enthusiasm, and entrepreneurial spirit he managed to build the right team and start a company. In 2013 the start-up was offered a place in the South Moravian Innovation Centre, a Czech business incubator. In the first year, Comprimato got funding from companies like Y Soft Ventures or Credo Ventures. The unique partnership brought not only the capital but also precious management know-how and network.
In April 2026, Comprimato joined AJA Video Systems — a California-based broadcast equipment company founded in 1993. We continue to operate as the Brno team, with the same engineering culture, while gaining a larger path to global customers.
Although we can boast of unique technology and business success, we remain a pleasantly lean company of under 20 people, without layers of impenetrable management — everyone is a full part of the team.
