Our story

Apify was launched by Jan Čurn and Jakub Balada in 2015 from the Y Combinator Fellowship in Mountain View, California. The original idea was to make it easy for developers to build flexible and scalable web crawlers simply using front-end JavaScript, thanks to the then new headless browser technology.

Built with ❤️ and 🍺 in Prague

In 2016, the team moved back to the Czech Republic, raised a seed investment, and started building a company around its product. Soon it became obvious that customers’ use cases need more than a simple JavaScript crawler, so we committed to building the most flexible full-stack platform for web scraping and browser automation.

Today we work in Lucerna Palace, a 700 sqm loft on the 7th and 8th floors that once belonged to Vácslav Havel, the founder of Lucerna and grandfather of the first Czech president. It's pet, bicycle, kid, and gamer-friendly, with ping-pong, PS5, foosball, and home to epic events and company parties.

In September 2026, we're moving nearby to 100 Yards, a bigger space still in the heart of downtown Prague. Same culture, more space.

We regularly host engaging public meetups, talks, and conferences, so you certainly won’t be bored!

Go global or go home!

Although Apify is headquartered in Prague, our clients come from all around the world, mostly the US. From non-profits like Thorn (which uses Apify to find missing children) to Y Combinator startups and large enterprises and Fortune 500 companies like Microsoft or Eaton Corporation, we help our clients improve their products, marketing, business decisions, and AI/LLM tools, using structured data from the web. We also participate in domestic non-profit projects like Hlídač Shopů, whose technology has recently been used and adapted by the European Commission to track fake discounts!
